'Stern' sentences for Malaysian shoe drug mules
Ten alleged 'drug mules' caught smuggling $8.5 million worth of methamphetamine into the country in their shoes have been sentenced in the High Court in Auckland.
Sentences handed down were either 10 years and six months or nine years and 11 months.
Most were sentenced to nine years and 11 months with a minimum non-parole period of four years and six months.
The Malaysian tour group were caught with a total of 8.55kg of methamphetamine stuffed in their shoes at Auckland Airport in April by sharp-eyed customs officials who noticed they were walking strangely.
